In the North West side of the city, a woman named Maria Johnson is walking down the street of her house, going home. She was on her phone, texting a friend when she heard footsteps behind her so she glimpsed behind and saw a man in a hood, walking fast towards her. She started walking faster and the man gained speed so she went faster and faster until she started running. She turned to the left, ran up the small steps and barged through the door of the reception and shut the door. The guard got startled, dropped his hot coffee on himself and ran to the back to clean it up. Maria peeked through the door’s peek hole and the man stopped in front of the house and looked up as if he could see her right through the door. He had blood running down his face and a knife on the back of his head. He had a blind left eye, a scar on his cheek with blood running down and was smiling like a maniac. “Death is only the beginning” the man said before he faced forward and walked away. Maria was shocked and couldn’t move for quite a while. Suddenly a hand grabbed her shoulder and she screamed really loud and hit the person with her bag. The man yelled “Ms Johnson, stop hitting me, it’s me, Gary!!”. She stopped and saw that she was hitting the guard, who was wearing a white T-shirt and had a towel around his neck. “Oh my god, I’m so so sorry, are you okay? Did I injure you in any way?” the woman asked. “I’m alright, Ms Johnson. But are you?” asked the guard and the woman replied “What do you mean?”. “I saw you barge in through the door and just freeze in place, looking out the door’s peek hole” said the man. The woman stood in place and just looked at the man. “I just saw… I… Nevermind, I just thought I forgot something is all but I didn’t” the woman smiled and walked past the man. “Goodnight, Gary. Don’t stay up too late” “But I’m the night guard…” “I know, sorry”. Maria used the elevator and got up to the fourth floor. She stood outside her apartment, number 444,started digging her purse for her house key, grabbed her keys from her purse, unlocked the door and walked in. She closed the door, turned the light on and stood there, thinking of how he was all bloody and had a crazed smile. She didn’t want to think of it anymore so she took her coat off, revealing a grey jumper on top of a yellow shirt and dark blue jeans. She then took her shoes off, walked into the first door on the left, put her purse on the table and sat on the couch. She turned the TV on and started checking the channels for something to watch and keep her mind off of that man until she passed a news channel that caught her attention. A female reporter was talking about a murder of a man named Carlos Denzel. The police were behind her, investigating the scene with paramedics checking the body for any other injuries and markings. She could see the man when an officer moved away from the body to talk to the reporter. The man looked like the one who had been chasing her, before. This time, he had his hood down, the knife on the ground, a bloody face with the eyes open and the same scar as before on his cheek. Maria immediately turned the TV off and folded herself up in a ball and put her eyes on her knees. She stayed still for a few minutes and then looked up to see a note on the table. She wondered who had left the note and when, so she took the note and read what it said. The words “Death is only the beginning” was written on it with a sloppy hand-writing which she barely made it out. She froze in place, looking at the note until she heard a sound behind her. She slowly turned her head around, saw what it was and screamed. The guard, Gary Larson, heard the scream, ran up the stairs and saw the door 444, surrounded by some of the neighbors, pounding on it. He ran up, opened the door with the spare keys and went inside, followed by the neighbors. The house had all its lights turned off and had a foul stench. Gary and the others went into the living room and some of the neighbors gasped while one screamed. Maria was on the couch, looking down to the ground with blood running down her face and a knife on the back of her head.
